FBLA State Competition Results

Eight Hickman students competed in state competition at the FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) State Leadership Conference in Columbia, Missouri this week.  All eight members and advisers Jeaniene Thompson and Colleen Goss attended the conference.  David Leon and Mike Richardson have qualified for national competition which will be held in San Antonio, Texas from June 28 through July 2.

Wells-Morgan Gives Demo To Culinary Skills USA Students

Adam Wells-Morgan, executive chef at the Club at Old Hawthorne, was a guest chef for the chef lecture series on April 18th.  He demonstrated pork saltimbocca with brussel sprouts and rustic potatoes to members of CACC Culinary Skills USA, a student organization. 

Adam, a native Columbian, is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America. At Old Hawthorne, he likes to incorporate different cooking techniques, seasonal ingredients and eclectic flavor combinations to keep things interesting for his diners. Wells-Morgan won top honors last summer in the 21st annual National Taste of Elegance contest sponsored by the National Pork Board.

Baking and Pastry European Gateaux Torte Sale Friday!

The Baking and Pastry class at the Columbia Area Career Center will be having a European Gateaux and Torte (Cake) Sale on Friday, April 20th from 9:00 until 3:30 PM.  The sale will take place in the culinary arts/baking classrooms 170 A &B (see website below for directions). Items will be first come, first served.

We will have many options ranging from Chocolate Mousse Cakes, Assorted Cupcakes to Orange Tortes Don’t forget - items are first come, first served.

Prices will range from $1.50 for individual items to $28.00 for large mousse cakes. We appreciate your continued support and hope to see you on Friday!!

Every student CACC brought to the Missouri State Skills USA competition placed in their category.  This is the tenth consecutive year that the Career Center has had a state champion for Culinary Arts!

BroJo Students Work MSHSAA Basketball Games

Niles Media Group afforded ten CACC Broadcast Journalism students with the opportunity of a high-school student's lifetime when the production company asked instructor Haley Brueck if she had any qualified students to help cover the 2012 MSHSAA state basketball championships.  Responding with an excited affirmative, Brueck shared the opportunity with her students, many of whom jumped at the chance be a part of a professional, working company.

Students operated cameras, ran graphics, replays, and served as production assistants throughout the weekend.

Brueck rated this opportunity as top-notch.  "It's wonderful. "Niles company employees couldn't tell the high school students from college students, and these students are getting real-world experience. There's nothing like it!"

Henneke Recognized by Magazine

Agriculture instructor and FFA sponsor Larry Henneke earned special recognition last month in Drive magazine's hero list, nominated by former student Katlyn Britt-Rankin.  Henneke last taught Britt-Rankin in 2009--a testament to the lasting effects of his mentoring on his students.

Drive is a youth livestock publication that, according to their website, "connects livestock exhibitors to industry leaders and future educational endeavors through editorial rich in lessons about life and choices."
