March "I Can" Award winners announced

Columbia Area Career Center held its "I Can" Club Award Ceremony at  Reynolds Alumni Center on the MU campus, March 14, 2013  The “I Can" Club award recognizes students who have demonstrated outstanding cooperation, self-motivation, preparedness, positive attitude, dependability and persistence which truly exemplifies the Career Center Expectations. The award is sponsored by our Partner-In-Education, MU Administrative Services. Congratulations to the “I Can" Club Winners.

Laura Estabrooks named Breaking Traditions State Educator Winner

The Breaking Traditions Awards are an annual recognition of outstanding nontraditional career education students and the educators and employers who support them. Non-traditional students are defined as those studying for careers that are traditionally chosen by the opposite gender.

Congratulations to  Laura Estabrooks who won the State Educator Breaking Traditions Award! Laura was nominated by Kate Harline, a senior in Geospatial Technology.  In the Trade and Industry programs of Geospatial Information Systems and Information Technology, female students and educators are considered non-traditional—since the program has a male population of 75 percent or more.

In addition to Laura winning the State Educator award, a student in the Practical Nursing program, Trevor Cavness, won the State Postsecondary/Adult Breaking Traditions Award. Trevor graduated from the Practical Nursing program last week and passed the State Board of Nursing (NCLEX) test this week!

Jeff Rayl-Central Missouri ACF Chef of the Year

Congratulations to CACC Culinary instructor Jeff Rayl for being awarded  "Chef of the Year" by the American Culinary Federation Central Missouri Chapter. Jeff has served as coordinator of the ACF Apprenticeship program for the past 15 years, where he oversees students from Johnson County Community College Culinary Arts program who are involved in internships at approved job sites in Columbia.
Rayl has been an instructor at CACC for 15 years, teaching Culinary I & II.
The banquet was held at Lodge of the Four Seasons in Lake Ozark.

CACC Students receive NCWIT Information Technology Award

Columbia Area Career Center students Kristen Buster (Graphic Design/Web Design), Najeebah Hussain (Computer Programming), Shelby Richardson (Geospatial Information Systems) and Michelle Zhuang (Computer Programming) have received the 2013 Missouri and Kansas NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing. The award, sponsored by Microsoft, Motorola Solutions Foundation, and the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) recognizes young high school women for their computing-related achievements and interests in an effort to encourage more young women to choose careers in technology. Congratulations to these award recipients! We are proud that four of our own students received this prestigious award.

Nominated for the award by their instructors, they are four of only 15 young women to receive the award throughout high schools across the Missouri and Kansas region.  They were selected for their demonstrated outstanding aptitude and interest in information technology and computing, solid leadership ability, excellent academic history and plans for post-secondary education.

Robert Allee, Columbia Area Career Center Computer Aided Design instructor, was named the NCWIT 2013 Missouri & Kansas Educator Award Recipient.  The award recognizes educators for their efforts to promote gender equity in computing by helping to encourage young women to continue exploring their interest in computing and technology.  Columbia Area Career Center Computer Aided Design students Samantha Ding, Natalie Heath, Katherine Hurdle, Jessica Murphey, and Kendall Overton; and Civil Engineering and Architecture student Breta Phillips also received recognition for their outstanding computer-related accomplishments. Culinary participates in Global Village

Cuisine from around the world was showcased at Rock Bridge High School's annual Global Village. Students from Chef Rayl's, Chef Harlan's and Chef Risner's Culinary I classes selected a country to research the food, culture and history in order to  prepare  a dish for 350 people to sample. Additionally they created brochures and displays to present their findings. Patrons  were treated to a smorgasbord of culinary delights. The event was a success in spite of having four snow days which limited each team's in class prep time.  Criteria for judging was based on their knowledge of the country, including what a typical day of  meals would be, indigenous foods, food exports and the most interesting thing they learned.  Thirty groups competed and the winners were: 1st place Greece, 2nd place Uzbekistan, 3rd place Sri Lanka, 4th place England and 5th place Bosnia.

Think First presents at CACC

Russ Burris from Think First presented to Health Science and Public Safety classes at CACC. Russ, a paraplegic, tells his story of surviving a car wreck with the intent of getting students to “think first” before doing anything that will distract them while driving.
