Graphic Design student wins Cover Design competition

Congratulations to Jacob Rice, Hallsville senior, whose design was selected for the 2013-14 Columbia Area Career Course Catalog. Rice’s design was chosen from among dozens of Graphic Design student entries in a cover design competition.

At the outset, students were offered sample shapes and graphics as a springboard by Professional and Community Education Marketing Coordinator, Amy Parris. Jacob tried a few layouts before deciding to keep it simple, choosing a blue background with the hexagon graphic. It tied in perfectly to the hexagon theme used inside the course guide to showcase programs. He used the graphic design program Photoshop to layout his ideas, but when he couldn’t get what he wanted just right, he went with his “fed up” idea—which became the winning entry.

Jacob made concessions early on to be able to take classes at the Career Center. He had to give up band and yearbook, as well as take history, health, and PE as a senior so that he could take electives in his selected career path. And like other Hallsville students, Rice leaves town an hour before school starts in order to arrive on time for classes in Columbia. Asked if it is worth it, Jacob says, “Without question it is.” Having taken Digital Media, A+IT, and marketing last year, this year Jacob is building on those skills with Graphic Design and Web Scripting. To fill his 3 credits required to come to CACC, Jacob serves as an IT Intern. This gives him professional level experience in maintaining networks by practicing alongside CACC’s network gurus, Juan Flores and Laura Estabrooks. Next semester Jacob will use this knowledge as he interns with the Hallsville Education Technology specialist.

Jacob says, “Don’t underestimate the Career Center, there are lots of resources available here that are not available at a regular high school.  If you can take a class in line with your career goals, it’s a good fit. You are not only paired with teachers who enjoy teaching, have real world experience, and are passionate about what they do, but you are also in class with students who have a common interest."

Just in case you are wondering how dedicated these students are, Hallsville students release for break on Wednesday, however, Jacob will be here on Thursday and Friday, exemplifying the Career Center expectation of attendance.
